Vase HALLE 1

1931 designed the HALLE vase, an icon of the Bauhaus tradition in its proportions, line work, and simple elegance. However, with the rise of National Socialism, the Jewish designer was initially denied the recognition she deserved: Friedlaender was removed from the records as the creator of the product, her design was temporarily nameless, and it was only many years later that it was sold again with great pride under her name by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. Over 90 years later, Berlin artist Rona Kobel has now transformed it into objects with political impact. The "Freedoom" vase tells of the fragility of freedom in powdery pastel tones and neo-baroque bows, while the "CouRAGE" vase addresses the necessary anger in the courage to change. The subtlest trick of the remake, however, is found on the bases and in the necks of the artworks, where Kobel gives Friedlaender a quiet comeback: the crossed-out signature of the designer is newly emphasized and made effective again with decisive dots placed beneath it.
"Freedoom" appears in 5 colors and is each limited to 9 pieces. The sugary sweet effect of the objects lasts only a brief moment until one becomes aware of the desperate eyes in the double O - which in the mint green variant are even pierced and can thus cry. The artist has hand-finished each unique piece.
